Novariant – High Precision Global Positioning Systems
Novariant produce high-precision Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for mining applications. Our GPS have provided countless benefits for positioning and managing equipment in open-pit mining, such as haul trucks, shovels, drills, dozers, mobile conveyors and other mission-critical machines. These have the capacity to be optimized by the use of real-time positioning applications enabled by GPS. Novariant recognise that in situations that require non-stop availability of real-time positioning data, GPS alone can fall short.
THE TERRALITE: SATELLITES FOR UNINTERRUPTED GPS
Novariant have produced a solution to this industry requirement in the form of the Terralite XPS positioning infrastructure, which operates continuously where GPS ceases. A set of ground-based Terralites set up around a pit enable Novariant’s GPS and XPS receivers to generate accurate, real-time positions around the clock.
Standard GPS systems rely on line-of-sight transmissions between satellites and mobile receivers. The inherently weak signals from orbiting GPS satellites are vulnerable to obstructions, which increase as the mine expands downward. Machine and surveying applications aimed at boosting mine productivity and efficiency rely on accurate real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS systems. The accomplishment of this tends to require the tracking of a minimum of four satellites with good geometry, a solution often unmet within deep mines.
TERRALITE GPS+XPS RECEIVERS
The Terralite GPS+XPS receiver is an integral part of Novariant’s Terralite XPS system, providing the ultimate position availability solution by continuously operating when and where GPS can’t. When used in conjunction with Terralite XPS ground-based transmit stations, the receiver is capable of interoperable tracking of both GPS and Novariant’s proprietary “XPS” signals to provide seamless positioning data.
Standard features of the GPS+XPS receivers include,
- 12-channel L1/L2 plus 12-channel XPS tracking
- Tri-frequency L1/L2/XPS antenna
- Rugged, shock-mounted design
- Up to 20Hz position updates
- Integrated radio modem and antenna
- One PPS output
- Programmable RS-232 serial port
The Terralite is field rugged, and designed to withstand the most hostile of environments. Terralite XPS transmitters are easily installed and positioned. The transmitters automatically begin to provide independent, interoperable XPS signals to any number of GPS and XPS receivers. Standard positioning outputs support the most popular GPS-enabled applications already running in the mine.
The Terralite demonstrates high performance in both static and mobile environments. Developed for machine guidance, control, and surveying applications that require fast, low-latency positioning, Novariant’s GPS+XPS receivers are compatible with most precision GPS-enabled applications, such as Modular’s ProVision drill, dozer and shovel systems. Terralite XPS transmitters and easily deployed and can be moved to cover ‘holes’ in GPS coverage.
